Nutrient Loss

Topsoil, rather than subsoil, contains most of the nutrients necessary for plant growth. Since topsoil is the first to go, eroding soil becomes less and less fertile as time goes on. As the finer, organic soil is carried away, the surface is left with course, less productive particles. As a result, it's productivity decreases.
